The process of house lifting, more particularly through jacking, is a discreet but potent manifestation of architectural resilience. In contrast to plain shoring or temporary propping, jacking requires increment of elevation in a measured way. The building is raised a few centimetres, and then it is stabilised with cribbing i.e. stacked timber supports that carry the load while the jacks are repositioned. This is repeated until the desired height is achieved, often to raise the plinth to a new street level or to introduce a new foundation system.
Following is the placement of a new permanent foundation, whether reinforced concrete pillars or a completely new ground-floor skeleton, relinking the building to the earth, yet now on more secure, stronger ground.

The lift can be made more complex by differential loading, brittle materials such as aged lime mortar, and unexpected internal modifications (e.g., lofts or mezzanines).
